Description - Philip Schuyler (1733-1804), a descendant of Albany's earliest settlers, chose this 80-acre parcel of farmland just south of the city as the site for his home. George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Benedict Arnold and Alexander Hamilton, who married Schuyler's daughter, visited the 1763 elegant Georgian style mansion. Following Schuyler's death in 1804, the mansion was sold and the land divided and sold to speculators. Several different families occupied the house as a private residence until 1886, when the mansion became a Roman Catholic orphanage. In 1912 it was purchased by the State of New York and on October 17, 1917 the 140th anniversary of General Burgoyne's defeat at Saratoga, it was dedicated as a state historic site.

Completed in 1763 and built in the elegant Georgian style, Schuyler's mansion evoked the praise of many travelers who described it in their journals. George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and Benedict Arnold were among Schuyler's visitors. Alexander Hamilton, who married Schuyler's daughter at the mansion in 1780, stayed at the house frequently.

Schuyler Mansion, on its small urban plot, is all that remains of an estate that once embraced elaborate gardens, orchards, fields and numerous farm buildings. Schuyler Mansion is being restored to the splendor of the 1790's when Philip Schuyler decorated it in the latest style.

Recreation - Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site offers educational services, manicured gardens, a gift shop, group tours, guided tours, interpretive signage and a visitor center / museum. The educational services, group tours, gift shop and visitor center are all handicapped accessible. The mansion is open mid-April through October, Wednesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday 1-5 p.m. From November through mid-April the site is available by appointment only from Tuesday-Friday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Group tours are by appointment. Admission fee is $3.00 adults, $2.00 NYS senior citizens and $1.00 for children ages 5-12. The site also offers various outreach programs to school groups.

Climate - The historic site has a varied climate with average January temperatures ranging from 14 to 22 degrees Fahrenheit (-10 to -6 degrees Celsius). Summer temperatures average around 72 degrees Fahrenheit (22 degrees Celsius). Precipitation in the region ranges from 36 to more than 44 inches of rain and snowmelt. A slender parcel along the eastern state line receive the heaviest precipitation.
