A wealth of plant and animal life is preserved in Ohio's State Forests
Description - Sunfish Creek State Forest is located in southern Ohio in the unglaciated portions of the Appalachian Plateau. Running along approximately three miles of the Ohio River, the Forest comprises 638 acres of rugged topography covered in mixed hardwood forest and white pine plantation. Ridges are narrow, slopes are steep, and elevations vary by 600 feet. The lowest elevation in Sunfish Creek State Forest is approximately 700 feet and the highest elevation reaches approximately 1,100 feet.

Through the heavily forested land runs shallow Sunfish Creek. Several old township roads slice the very remote, secluded Forest. Boundaries of this wilderness environment are unmarked. Much of the surrounding property has been striped mined by coal companies denoting an unofficial perimeter.

Attractions - Sunfish Creek State Forest is an undeveloped site with very limited access. Visitors must either park alongside the road or get permission to park on adjacent private property. Trails on the Forest are undeveloped and visitors should have good orienteering skills. Hikers should be aware that old hazardous open wells do exist. Berries, nuts and mushrooms may be gathered and removed except from tree seed orchards or posted areas. Disturbance, defacement or destruction of any property, material, natural feature or vegetation is prohibited. Please adhere to the Leave No Trace principles to ensure the next visitor an equal experience. There are no restrooms or drinking water. Sunfish Creek State Forest is open to visitors between the hours of 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. daily.

Recreation - Berry picking, nut and mushroom gathering are permitted. No facilities available at Sunfish Creek State Forest.

Climate - This state has four distinct seasons and a brilliant fall foliage display in it southern woods during mid October. Winter lasts from December through February with average temperatures near 25 degrees F. Low temperatures dip to single digits, but do not often drop below zero. Northern regions of the state receive average snowfall amounts of 55 inches, while the central and southern regions of the state receive lesser amounts with averages near 30 inches. This difference is caused by lake-affect moisture patterns.

Spring temperatures begin to warm the landscapes of Ohio by mid March and are in full swing by April. Temperatures range from 40 through 70 degrees F through the spring months. This season often brings the most rainfall, before the drying heat of summer. Summer can be extremely hot and humid in the interior of Ohio. Temperatures reach above 90 degrees F frequently through July and August. Cooler fall temperatures don't reach the region until mid to late September. This is a pleasant time to visit as the air is crisp with low humidity levels. Ohio's annual precipitation usually reaches slightly above 50 inches.

Location - Sunfish Creek State Forest is located in the Ohio Valley along the Ohio River about four miles north of Clarington and three miles south of Powhatan Point. The Forest is easily reached from State Route 7 on the east.
