Punderson State Park
Description - Punderson Lake, one of Ohio's few natural lakes, owes its origin to the Wisconsinan glacier. When a large block of ice broke off the glacier it created a huge depression which filled with meltwater creating Punderson Lake. Known as a kettle lake, Punderson is the largest and deepest kettle lake in Ohio.

The area surrounding Punderson Lake developed into a quiet resort providing a getaway from the bustling Cleveland area. Summer cottages and even a small hotel were built on the hills surrounding the lake. In 1929, construction began on the English-Tudor manor house, but the facility was not completed until 1948. That year, the ODNR Division of Wildlife purchased the land and lake for hunting and fishing. In 1951, the area was transferred to the Division of Parks and Recreation for development as a state park. The manor house was completely remodeled and opened to the public on November 15, 1956. A structural renovation was completed in 1982.

Attractions - Several overnight options present themselves at Punderson State Park. The lovely English-Tudor manor house offers 31 guest rooms, a dining room, meeting rooms along with outdoor and indoor swimming pools. Twenty-six cottages sleep six persons each. They have two bedrooms, bath with a shower, living room, complete kitchen, dining area and screened porch. Situated on the site of a former Indian village, the 201-site campground offers showerhouses, flush toilets, electricity and pet camping. Two full hookup sites also include water and sewer service. Three fully equipped Rent-A-RV units are available for daily and weekly rental in season.

Beautiful 101-acre Punderson Lake invites boaters to explore the many scenic coves. Electric motors only are permitted. Boat rentals are available at the concession. The 2.5-mile shoreline has some severe drop-offs to depths reaching 60 feet. A fishing pier is located near the resort lodge Anglers enjoy catches of bluegill, largemouth bass, rainbow and golden trout and catfish. A valid Ohio fishing license is required.

Fourteen miles of trails take the hiker to some of the more interesting and scenic areas of the park. Picnic facilities with tables, grills and drinking water are also located in the scenic areas.

Situated in the heart of Ohio's "snow belt," Punderson provides cold weather thrills for its visitors including a lighted sled hill. Snowmobile trails offer access to the park for those with snowmobiles. Cross-country skiing is permitted on trails while the lake offers a specific area for ice fishing.

During the warmer months, Punderson offers a championship-rated, 18-hole public golf course. Reservations are always advisable and required for weekend play. The pro shop stocks all necessary merchandise and has a snack bar. As of this writing, Fall 2001, the course is temporarily closed for renovations.

Recreation - Specific activities at Punderson State Park include fishing, hiking, picnicking, lake swimming, pool swimming, nature programs, boating, snowmobiling, sledding, cross-country skiing, ice fishing, overnight stays at a cottage or in the lodge, restaurant dining, golfing, and camping

Climate - This state has four distinct seasons and a brilliant fall foliage display in it southern woods during mid October. Winter lasts from December through February with average temperatures near 25 degrees F. Low temperatures dip to single digits, but do not often drop below zero. Northern regions of the state receive average snowfall amounts of 55 inches, while the central and southern regions of the state receive lesser amounts with averages near 30 inches. This difference is caused by lake-affect moisture patterns.

Spring temperatures begin to warm the landscapes of Ohio by mid March and are in full swing by April. Temperatures range from 40 through 70 degrees F through the spring months. This season often brings the most rainfall, before the drying heat of summer. Summer can be extremely hot and humid in the interior of Ohio. Temperatures reach above 90 degrees F frequently through July and August. Cooler fall temperatures don't reach the region until mid to late September. This is a pleasant time to visit as the air is crisp with low humidity levels. Ohio's annual precipitation usually reaches slightly above 50 inches.

Location - Punderson State Park and Resort Lodge are located near the town of Newbury off State Route 44 in northeastern Ohio.
