Description
- The refuge is on the Coldwater Creek arm of the Corps of Engineers' Optima Reservoir Project. The lake never filled to proposed levels, therefore, no open water habitat occurs on the refuge. Mixed grass prairie grassland with sand sage, yucca and prickly pear cactus is the primary habitat type on the area with a narrow band of mature cottonwood trees along the creek channel. Migratory and resident bird species, white-tailed deer and small mammals are the primary wildlife species occurring on the refuge.
Location -
Optima National Wildlife Refuge is located near the center of the Oklahoma panhandle.
