General Information

Description - The Wickiup Dam and Reservoir are features of the Deschutes Project. Recreation on this 11,200-acre reservoir is located in the Cascade Mountains about 40 miles southwest of Bend. Fish species include kokanee, coho salmon, rainbow trout, mountain whitefish, and trophy-size brown trout. Fishing season runs from late April through October. Reservoir acre feet and total reservoir capacity and cubic feet/second release rates for rivers below Deschutes River Basin reservoirs and select river locations are updated daily and graphically provided.

Attractions - Recreation on this 11,200-acre reservoir is located in the Cascade Mountains about 40 miles southwest of Bend. Good access via U.S. 97 and Forest Service roads. Fish species include kokanee, coho salmon, rainbow trout, mountain whitefish, and trophy-size brown trout. Fishing season runs from late April through October.

Recreation - Recreation at The Wickiup Reservoir includes; boating, camping, fishing, hunting, picnicking, and water sports. There are six campground located at Wickiup Reservoir.

Climate - Climate in central and eastern Oregon varies greatly depending on elevation. The high elevations receive much more precipitation and colder temperatures. These regions are much more arid and see greater temperature extremes than western Oregon. Much of the precipitation comes from October to April, mostly in the form of snow in the higher elevations. Winter temperatures can drop well below zero degrees Fahrenheit. Snow remains in the high mountains into early summer. Late spring, summer and early autumn tend to bring clear, sunny days, with warm to hot temperatures at the low elevations and moderate temperatures at the higher elevations. Summer afternoon thunderstorms are not uncommon.

Report: I camp at Wickiup often and love it. There is a large campground owned by the Elks of Bend which I am a member. There are also many USFS campgrounds to choose from. This year they are working on the dam and the water level has been very low but in most years the lake is one of the best to fish.
