General Information

Description - Fort Stevens was the primary military defense installation in the three fort Harbor Defense during the Civil War. Today, Fort Stevens has grown into a 3,700 acre park offering exploration of history, nature and recreational opportunities.

Attractions - Camping, beachcombing, fresh water lake swimming, trails, wildlife viewing, a historic shipwreck and a military historical area make Fort Stevens a uniquely diversified park. A network of nine miles of bicycle trails and six miles of hiking trails allow you to explore the park through spruce and hemlock forests, wetlands, dunes and shore pine.

Recreation - Camping, Playgrounds, Picnicking, Wildlife watching, Bird watching, mammal watching, Boating,
Boat ramp, Fishing, Windsurfing, Swimming,Walking trail, Hiking trail and a Bicycle trail.

Climate - The area receives a high amount of precipitation. Much of the precipitation comes from October to April in the form of rain at the low elevations Although snow is possible in the lowest elevations, it is infrequent. Late spring, summer and early autumn tend to bring clear, sunny days with moderate temperatures.

Location - Ft.Stevens State Park is located off US 101, 10 miles west of Astoria.

Report: We have been camping at Ft Stevens 2 times now. Make reservations in advance, it fills up quickly. This is an awesome park...so much to do and see. The park itself is absolutely lovely and kept up beautifully by the staff there...they deserve a round of applause!! Fishing, clam digging, trails for hiking and biking, full hookups for trailers, wonderful restrooms/showers, wildlife and then all of the military history there....it's so nice and really worth a long weekend (or more)....Astoria is right there and Seaside is 15minutes the other direction....WHAT A GREAT TIME!!...Big Foot restaurant in Seaside has fantastic Prime Rib :)

Report: I have visited Ft. Stevens twice in my lifetime and I'm now forty. Once in the late 70's and again in the Spring of 1984. If you love to relax and enjoy nature I highly recommend Ft. Stevens! As a teen vacationing with my parents we biked and hiked every trail there. It was incredible how the landscape changed from forest, to tropical, to beach. The old sunken ship and the old fort are an incredible experience! I could almost feel the presence of the people who were originally a part of them. As a 3rd year college student, I and a friend went backpacking from Seaside to Astoria. Ft. Stevens was at the top of our list to visit. Again, we did every trail, and I was still amazed! I frequently speak of Ft. Stevens and show pictures to all my friends. My family and I are making future plans to visit again soon! The number of people you encounter depends largely upon the season - but whenever you visit, you will not be disappointed!! If it's still there, try Neff's Cafe on Hwy 101 (somewhere between Seaside and Astoria). They made an Awesome Oyster Omlet!
