A beautiful garden in Shore Acres State Park
Description - Perched on rugged sandstone cliffs high above the ocean, Shore Acres State Park is an exciting and unexpected combination of beautiful natural and constructed features. Once the grand estate of pioneer timber baron Louis Simpson, Shore Acres features lushly planted gardens with plants and flowers from all over the world. Something is in bloom almost every day of the year.

Attractions - In the landscaped area you'll discover a formal garden, an oriental-style pond and two rose gardens which include an All American Rose Selection display. From Thanksgiving through New Years, the gardens are ablaze with thousands of colored lights and holiday decorations put up by community volunteers and The Friends of Shore Acres in cooperation with the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.

After seeing the garden, you can stroll down a trail to a secluded ocean cove at Simpson Beach or skirt the cliff's edge to see spectacular ocean vistas which often include towering waves crashing against the shoreline after a storm and migrating grey whales. On the site of Simpson's vanished mansion, a fully enclosed observation building will allow you to view the ocean and protect you from the weather. The observation building has interpretive panels describing the history of the Simpson estate.

The Friends of Shore Acres operate a gift and information center at the entrance to the formal gardens where visitors can purchase items that relate to the historical and natural features of Shore Acres. The Friends also sponsor a variety of horticultural and cultural events at the garden throughout the year.

Vital stats: A small fee or an annual pass are required for use of this park.

Recreation - Shore Acres offers beach access and opportunities for picnicking, wildlife watching, hiking and viewing interpretive information.

Climate - The Oregon coast receives abundant rainfall, mostly between October and April. July and August bring the best chance for clear days. Summer temperatures are normally moderate and almost never hot. Winter temperatures are normally cool at the lower elevations and cold at the higher elevations. Although snow is possible in the lowest elevations, it is infrequent and does not stay on the ground for long.

Location - Shore Acres is located Off US 101, 13 miles southwest of Coos Bay. It is found in the South Coast region of Oregon.

Report: Shore Acres is a great botanical garden but the real jewel in this park is Simpson Reef as seen from the great viewing platform provided by US Fish & Wildlife Service. You can see up to 5 species of marine mammals. In summer on Saturday and Sunday, Docents are present from 10 am til 4 pm with spotting scopes and lots of information about the animals. At other times there are coin operated spotting scopes and great interpretive signs. The viewpoint is about a mile beyond the Shore Acres entrance and is outside the day use fee area. Cape Arago Highway loops back about a half mile beyond the viewpoint.
