General Information

Description - Nestled in the upper reaches of the scenic Clarion River Valley, the glistening waters of East Branch Clarion River Lake provide the ideal setting for numerous outdoor recreational opportunities. The US Army Corps of Engineers maintains the vicinity of the dam in cooperation with the surrounding Elk State Park, Elk State Forest and Pennsylvania State Game Lands. The Corps provides camping, hiking, viewing scenery, picnicking and boat launching facilities for the public's enjoyment. Boating is very popular at East Branch offering recreation for various types and sizes of watercraft. Unlimited horsepower boating is permitted and water skiing is a popular activity. There are two boat launch ramps located at both ends of the lake. One is situated near the dam and the other is in the State Park. Fishing at East Branch can be an exciting and rewarding experience. A wide variety of fishing conditions and the clean and fertile waters have lured many anglers to the area. The meandering Clarion River, tumbling mountain streams, and placid lake have yielded fine catches of muskie, trout, walleye, and smallmouth bass. The cold weather enthusiast will also enjoy the excellent ice fishing available at East Branch during the winter months. Hunters have found a remarkable variety of wildlife in the area including deer, turkey, bear and small game.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers invites you to visit the lake and discover why East Branch is one of the most popular sites for recreation in northwestern Pennsylvania. The area in the vicinity of the dam is maintained by the Corps of Engineers. The remainder of the lake is surrounded by Elk State Park, Elk State Forest and Pennsylvania State Game Lands.

Recreation - The Corps provides camping, picnicking and boat launching facilities for the public's enjoyment. East Branch's campground offers a change of pace. The natural surroundings and relaxed atmosphere of the area provide campers with the opportunity to leisurely enjoy their stay at the lake. There are 41 campsites suitable for both trailer and tent camping (no showers or electrical hookups). If a relaxing picnic with family or friends is more to your liking, the picnic area at the dam offers an interesting and peaceful setting for an afternoon's outing. A hike on the Shady Ridge Nature Trail enhances this outdoor experience. An overlook with an accessible walkway leading to a picnic pavilion is located in the area, providing sightseers with a panoramic view of the lake and East Branch Dam.

Boating is very popular at East Branch. All types and sizes of watercraft can be found on the lake. Unlimited horsepower boating is permitted and water skiing is a popular activity. There are two boat launching ramps located at either end of the lake. One is situated near the dam and the other is in the State Park. Both provide easy access to the water. Boat launch user fees are required from May - Labor Day at the Corps boat launch ramp.

Climate - Pennsylvania generally has a moist climate with cold winters and warm summers. The East Branch area generally has very cold winter months with temperatures averaging 22 degrees Fahrenheit (-6 degrees Celsius). The region's average summer temperatures average 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 Celsius). Precautions should be made when traveling this snowy area in the winter.

Location - To reach the river / lake area travel from Bradford, Pennsylvania south on US 219 about 25 miles to Wilcox turning east on SR 1006 and following signs to the dam.
