Description - The U.S. Forest Services manages an area of over 513,000 acres known as the Allegheny National Forest. Recreational opportunities abound in this northwestern area of Pennsylvania. Included in those outdoor opportunities are over 600 miles of multi-use trails including a segment of the new Rails-to-Trails route. Hunters have enjoyed this region for generations hunting both elk and black bear along with a variety of smaller game. Fishing, swimming, sight-seeing, viewing wildlife including bobcats and bald eagles is enjoyed as well as environmental education opportunities and some of the best orienteering on the East Coast.

- The Allegheny National Forest Region of Pennsylvania is a remote area of the state characterized by wilderness surroundings. This region contains the "God's Country" of Potter county and the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. It is paradise for outdoor adventurers.
Recreation - Within this beautiful wilderness area lies the Allegheny National Forest. Over 513,000 acres are managed by the U.S. Forest Service to sustain a variety of uses. Over 600 miles of trails criss-cross its ridges and valleys. It provides opportunities for hunting, fishing, swimming, hiking, camping, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, boating, mountain biking, ATV riding, group camping and environmental education. Many of these opportunities are offered at the State Park facilities as well. Rails-to-Trails, the new multipurpose paths, travel in this area. The Allegheny Area offers spectacular scenery and some of the best opportunities for orienteering, horseback riding and viewing elk and bald eagles. Climate - The Allegheny National Forest Area experiences four distinct seasons. Winters can bring cold temperatures and often bring snow for winter recreation activities. Spring and autumn are transitional periods, with normally mild temperatures but occasional seasonal fluctuations. Summers bring warm and sometimes hot temperatures, making the waters of the Allegheny National Forest attractive. Location -
The Allegheny National Forest Area is located in northwest Pennsylvania. It lies on the east side of the Allegheny River and north of the Laurel Highlands Area.
