Description - Pennsylvania is rich in National Park Service historical sites, battlefields, monuments, memorials, rivers and trails. Each is distinctly significant deserving protection and maintenance. The Commonwealth is also home to The Allegheny National Forest which is a grand forest land managed by the National Forest Service. Thousands of acres are maintained and protected for the timber while offering a wilderness vacation destination for a variety of ages, abilities and tastes.

- The National Park Service boasts of having over 16 designated historical sites, battlefields, monuments, memorials, rivers and trails within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Each is significant within itself deserving the protection and maintenance from the Park Service. The National Forest Service maintains and manages one of America's finest hardwood producing territories, the Allegheny National Forest, located in the northwestern region of the state.
Recreation - U.S. Forest Service in Pennsylvania offers an opportunity for hunting, fishing, swimming, hiking, camping, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, boating, mountain biking, ATV riding, group camping and environmental education. The National Park Service manages six National Historic Sites, two National Scenic Trails, several National Memorials and Parks and several National Recreation Areas. Hiking, viewing historical attractions, picnicking and more are enjoyed at these locations. Climate - Pennsylvania has four distinct seasons and recreationists can find good in each one. Summer is usually hot and humid often extending from late May into September. Expect temperatures in the southeastern part of the state to reach 90 degrees F frequently. Temperatures in the Northern and western areas of the state are slightly cooler. Summer lows usually don't dip below 60 degrees F. Winter temperatures average between 25 degrees and 45 degrees F in southeastern Pennsylvania. The west and mountains receive colder temperatures that average between -10 degrees and 35 degrees F. Spring and fall are excellent times to visit the state as temperatures are mild with little humidity. Spring brings a variety of wildflowers and shrubs into bloom and fall color displays of deciduous trees draw many to the forests of the state. Location -
Pennsylvania offers National Sites throughout the entire state. Gettysburg lies within the southeastern area of the state while the Allegheny National Forest rests in the northwest corner. The Delaware National Scenic River serves as an eastern border while the Appalachian National Scenic Trail bisects the state. Rich in history, culture and beautiful forests, Pennsylvania has national lands across the breadth of the Commonwealth.
