Frances Slocum State Park
Description - Frances Slocum State Park offers 1,035 acres of recreation and a horseshoe shaped lake offering 165 acres. The lake was created to control flooding. Picnicking areas and the dam were constructed and opened in the spring of 1968.

Frances Slocum State Park is a haven for outdoor recreation. The park offers two boat launches and courtesy docks, boat rentals, picnicking throughout the park, camping at over 100 sites, a group tent site, fishing, swimming and hiking. The park also offers winter sports for those who enjoy ice skating, ice fishing, sledding, tobogganing and snowmobiling.

A park environmental educator from March through November conducts natural and cultural history programs. Approximately 300 acres of Frances Slocum State Park are open to hunting, trapping and the training of dogs during established seasons. Common game species are deer, rabbit and squirrel

There are handicapped accessible restrooms, pavilions, campsites and a fishing pier.

In 1972, Tropical Storm Agnes devastated large areas of the adjacent Wyoming Valley. Frances Slocum State Park was closed to the public and 280 families moved into temporary houses in the park until their homes were restored. After the last family moved out, the park reopened to the public in June 1974.

Recreation - Frances Slocum State Park is a haven for outdoor recreation. The area offers two boat launches and courtesy docks, boat rentals, picnicking throughout the park, camping at over 100 sites, a group tent site, fishing, swimming and hiking. The park also offers winter sports for those who enjoy ice skating, ice fishing, sledding, tobogganing and snowmobiling.

A park environmental educator from March through November conducts natural and cultural history programs. An environmental interpretive center located in the day use area features exhibits on American Indians and ecological topics. The park provides day and evening environmental education and interpretive programs that usually begin at the campground amphitheater.

Approximately 300 acres of Frances Slocum State Park are open to hunting, trapping and the training of dogs during established seasons. Common game species are deer, rabbit and squirrel. Hunting woodchucks, also known as groundhogs, is prohibited. Dog training is only permitted from the day following Labor Day to March 31 in designated hunting areas. The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Pennsylvania Game Commission rules and regulations apply. Contact a park manager for accessible hunting information.

Use extreme caution with firearms at all times. Other visitors use the park during hunting seasons. Firearms and archery equipment may be uncased and ready for use only in authorized hunting areas during hunting seasons. In areas not open to hunting or during non-hunting seasons, firearms and archery equipment must be kept in the owner's car, trailer or camp.

There are handicapped accessible restrooms, pavilions, campsites and a fishing pier.

Climate - Pennsylvania generally has a moist climate with cold winters and warm summers. The Frances Slocum State Park area has cold winter months with temperatures averaging around 24 to 28 degrees Fahrenheit (-4 to -2 degrees Celsius). The area's average summer temperatures range around 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit (20 to 22 Celsius).

Location - From Exit 47B of Interstate 81, take Route 309 North approximately 7 miles. Turn right (east) on Carverton Road and go approximately 4 miles. Turn left (north) on 8th Street Road and go approximately one mile. Turn left (west) onto Mt. Olivet Road and go one mile. The park entrance is on the left.
