Lake Wateree State Park
Description - This 238-acre park is located on Lake Wateree, one of South Carolina's premier fishing lakes, with over 13,700 acres and 242 miles of shoreline. The dam was completed in 1919, making it one of the oldest lakes in the state. The park provides a habitat for many species of wildlife, with an abundance of whitetail deer, gray squirrels, raccoons, opossums and wild turkey. Bird species include egrets, blue heron, mallards and wood ducks. A large oak tree in the picnic area dates back over 100 years. Campers and fishermen enjoy the convenient access from I-77.

The campground has 72 sites which can accommodate RV's and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Lake Wateree offers fishing for bream, catfish, crappie, white bass, striped bass, largemouth bass, and white perch. The park also offers a 1-mile nature trail, a park store, two boat ramps, a picnic area, and playground equipment.

Recreation - Lake Wateree offers opportunities for fishing, viewing wildlife, camping, picnicking, hiking and boating.

Climate - South Carolina generally has a temperate climate, with cool winters and warm, humid summers. Snow and freezing temperatures are possible in the winter at the higher elevations. Thunderstorms are possible throughout the year but most common in the spring and summer. Tropical storms occasionally strike the coast during the hurricane season.

Location - Lake Wateree State Park is 15 miles east of Winnsboro off US 21 and 11 miles off I-77.

Report: Anyone from Columbia looking a great lake spot needs to check this place out. The fishing is great and you don't need a boat to catch bass. Stevie D's in Ridgeway makes a great prefishing breakfast that you can eat on the way. It's very convenient and is only a twenty minute drive from my house. Fish on the rocks in the state park. You will usually not be surrounded by hordes of parttime fishermen.

Report: This is a great place. I would rather go there than to the beach. You meet the most friendly people there. So doesn't alot of others you have to call three months ahead to get a spot on the water. Everytime I get some time off from work I go there. The rangers are very nice and help in any way they can.
