Description
- South Carolina's northwest corner serves as a gateway to the mountains. This is an area of high plateaus and mountains, with elevations reaching over 3,500 feet. The Blue Ridge mountains are forested and steep, some places penetrable only along narrow passes cut by cliff-walled rivers. From the mountain heights, some of the rivers plunge hundreds of feet. A favorite destination of hikers is the 400-foot Raven Cliff Falls, in northern Greenville County near Caesars Head.The Andrew Pickens Ranger District on the Sumter National Forest, covers a large part of this region. The Andrew Pickens includes the Ellicott Wilderness, and the Chattooga Wild and Scenic River amongst other attractions. Numerous State Parks are scattered throughout the region, including Jones Gap, Caesars Head, Table Rock, and Oconee. Keowee-Toxaway and Lake Hartwell State Parks both sit on large lakes. Cowpens National Battlefield commemorates a decisive battle that helped turn the tide of the Revolutionary War in the South.
Recreation - This mountainous region offers outstanding outdoor recreation opportunities. The National Forest and the State Parks offer opportunities for activities such as hiking, camping, picnicking, swimming, boating, fishing, horseback riding, viewing scenery and more. The Chattooga River offers kayaking, canoeing, rafting, fishing and sightseeing. The large reservoirs offer boating, water skiing, fishing and other water based activities. The Cowpens National Battlefield provides visitors the opportunity to view a significant historic site. Climate - South Carolina generally has a temperate climate, with cool winters and warm, humid summers. Snow and freezing temperatures are possible in the winter at the higher elevations. Thunderstorms are possible throughout the year but most common in the spring and summer. Tropical storms occasionally strike the coast during the hurricane season. Location -
The Upstate Region of South Carolina is located in the northwest corner of the state. It includes the cities of Greenville and Spartanburg. Interstates 85 and 26 both lead through the area.
