General Information

Description - Big Stone Lake provides the setting for this popular camping and picnic area nestled in the shade of a native wooded forest. Along the many hiking trails, you can observe wildlife, prairie plants and scenic vistas. Runoff from melting glaciers 10,000 years ago created the river Warren. A section of the river is known today as Big Stone Lake. Rugged rock-strewn bluffs and scenic timbered shorelines from the setting of this park. The first Europeans came to this area in 1678 when French explorers from Montreal and Quebec came searching and found fur-bearing animals. An excellent trading business with area American Indians prompted the English to claim the area.

Attractions - Five hiking trails take visitors past historic sites and scenic overlooks. Interpretive trail guidebooks are available. Camping & Fees: $10/non-electrical, $13/electrical site. 49 sites (36 electrical). One wheelchair accessible site. Six tent-only sites. Showers. Water. Dump station. Camping Cabin: One cabin, wheelchair accessible. Sleeps four people. $32/night

Recreation - Nine-hole disc golf course. Horseshoe pits. Wheelchair accessible picnic shelter, picnic area. Playground equipment. Volleyball. Softball diamond. Trails: Five interesting short hiking trails. Interpretive trail guidebooks available. Cross-country ski trail and near snowmobile trail in winter. Warming shelter. Swimming: Swimming beach. No lifeguard on duty. Swim at your own risk. Fishing/Boating: Fish cleaning station. Boat ramp. Accessible fishing dock. Lake well-known for its walleye. Both SD and MN fishing licenses honored. License required.

Location - Located 15 miles N of Milbank off SD Hwy 15
