General Information

Big Hill Pond

Big Hill Pond
Description - Big Hill Pond State Park lies in the southwestern part of McNairy County and encompasses approximately 5,000 acres of magnificent timberland and hardwood bottom land. Cypress Creek and Tuscumbia River border the property. Several oxbow lakes and sloughs add to the waterway. The flood plain, adjacent to both the Tuscumbia River and Cypress Creek, contains small oxbow lakes and swamp areas that are desirable habitat for waterfowl, wildlife and fishing.

Attractions - The park derives its name from Big Hill Pond which was created in 1953 when dirt was scooped from a borrow pit to build a levee across the Tuscumbia and Cypress Creek bottoms for the Memphis to Charleston Railroad. Over the years, a great stand of cypress trees has grown in and around the 35-acre pond. The Pond is accessible by four wheel drive.

Park highlights include The Boardwalk which is an eight tenths (.8) of a mile long walkway through the scenic Dismal Swamp; The Observation Tower which is 70 foot refurbished fire tower that offers a panoramic view of Travis McNatt Lake and Dismal Swamp; Civil War Earthworks which is a railroad guard post built by Union Soldiers; and Nature observations of waterfowl, including osprey, and their migrations in spring and fall.

Recreation - Campsites, backpacking trails, picnic sites and a visitors center are located within the area and offer numerous recreational opportunities for everyone.

Climate - Tennessee has a temperate climate with short, mild winters. The average annual snowfall for the state is 12 inches. Spring comes in early March bringing flowering trees and shrubs, and warmer weather. Spring temperatures average between 45 and 70 degrees. Summer's full force arrives in the region by mid May, bringing warm weather and higher humidity. The mountains of eastern Tennessee are a great place to escape the hot summer temperatures as the higher elevation cools the air slightly. Cool fall temperatures bring crisp air and brilliant fall colors. Mid to late October is a good time to visit the region to experience the fall foliage.

Location - Big Hill Pond State Park is located about 18 miles south of Selmer, in McNairy County, on State Hwy. 57. From U.S. Hwy. 45, turn west on Hwy. 57 from Eastview. Big Hill Pond is located on Hwy. 57 about 10 miles from the U.S. Hwy. 45 and 57 intersection.
