- The Wetland Management District lies in the extreme southwestern portion of the Prairie Pothole Region, encompassing 13 counties in southeastern South Dakota. The lands managed by the District provide extremely important habitat for migratory birds as well as resident species once common to the diverse prairie ecosystem. Thirteen waterfowl species can be found nesting on the District. A total of 213 avian species have been recorded throughout the District.
