General Information

Description - One of six large lakes on the Missouri River. Area contains numerous village sites of early Indian culture. A visitor center contains exhibits and displays. From Sioux Falls, W on I-90 to Chamberlain, then N on SD 50.

Report: Go to Lower Brule reservation (West side of Lake Sharpe0, town Lower Brule, as at Golden Buffalo Casino where is the best place to view Narrows which is land area good for viewing the Big Bend of the Missouri. Check out Tribal Office Building on hill overlooking Lower Brule as unusual architecture (built 2001). Go to Lower Brule Wildlife buffalo/elk pastures at Wildlife Office building north on gravel about3 miles from Town of Lower Brule on gravel road along lake. Excellent wildlife management organization. Fish for smallmouth bass in April/May on face of Big Bend Dam and again in fall on face of Big Bend Dam. Excellent walleye fishery in lower half of lake, everyone gets fish in May - June out in front of Lower Brule town on nightcrawlers or minnows, spinner rig and bottom bouncers very common. Fish healthy 13 - 20 inches common, note South Dakota slot limit between 15 and 18 inches. Fort Thompson and Lower Brule both have casinos and good restaurants. Gas stations provide information, fuel, ice, snacks. Guide service for pheasant, prairie dog, deer, grouse hunting.
