Description - Leesville Lake was constructed primarily for flood control, recreation, fish and wildlife enhancement. The Leesville Dam was completed in October 1936 and is a rolled earth fill with impervious core, maximum height of 74 feet, 1,695 feet long, with the top width of 25 feet, and the base width of 450 feet.
Attractions
- Leesville Lake is consistently rated as one of Ohio's best muskie lakes. With 1,000 acres of water surface and 27 miles of shore, canoeists that enjoy placid water also favor the lake. A 10 HP limit is established at the lake. There are two public boat ramps and two private marinas offering cabins, docking, sales and service, boat rental, fuel and meals. Camping, hunting and hiking at Leesville Lake are available through the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD). Biking is permitted on main roads and campground areas. Each year the Carroll County Historical Society hosts the Algonquin Mill Festival. This festival includes art and crafts, local bands, demonstrations of various traditions of old times, antique steam engines, and tours of reconstructed buildings from days gone bye. This festival takes place the second weekend in October each year. Just a short drive from Leesville Lake while you are out seeing the fall colors.
Recreation - Fishing, paddleboating, and 10 HP boating is permitted at Leesville Lake. Recreations nearby include cabin stay, camping, boat docking, dining, swimming, and picnicking. Climate - This state has four distinct seasons and a brilliant fall foliage display in it southern woods during mid October. Winter lasts from December through February with average temperatures near 25 degrees F. Low temperatures dip to single digits, but do not often drop below zero. Northern regions of the state receive average snowfall amounts of 55 inches, while the central and southern regions of the state receive lesser amounts with averages near 30 inches. This difference is caused by lake-affect moisture patterns. Spring temperatures begin to warm the landscapes of Ohio by mid March and are in full swing by April. Temperatures range from 40 through 70 degrees F through the spring months. This season often brings the most rainfall, before the drying heat of summer. Summer can be extremely hot and humid in the interior of Ohio. Temperatures reach above 90 degrees F frequently through July and August. Cooler fall temperatures don't reach the region until mid to late September. This is a pleasant time to visit as the air is crisp with low humidity levels. Leesville Lake is on McGuire Creek, a tributary of Conotton Creek on Tuscarawas River, which runs into the Muskingum River From New Philadelphia, Ohio. To reach the lake travel State Route 39 to Route 212.
