General Information

Description - The lake provides a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities for millions of visitors each year. The lake covers 57,900 acres at summer pool, elevation 359 mean sea level, and is surrounded by 1,004 miles of shoreline. Natural conditions at Lake Barkley make it possible for the public to participate in activities such as hiking, fishing, hunting, camping, picnicking, and boating. In addition, there is a Civil War Monument, historic relics, commercial marinas, public parks and wildlife refuges. The many species of wildlife here, including golden and bald eagles, make bird watching and nature photography exciting pastimes.

Three of these areas have a launching ramp, picnic area, tables and grills. Some also have playgrounds, developed swimming areas, drinking water and trails. The fourth area, Devil's elbow, only has a launching ramp.

Climate - This state experiences a temperate climate with nearly 50 inches of rainfall annually. Thirteen inches of snow is an annual average in Kentucky. There are four distinct seasons here with summer temperatures reaching 90 degrees F frequently in July and August. Low summer temperatures dip near 70 degrees F at night. Winter high temperatures often reach 45 degrees with lows dipping below freezing. Spring and fall are particularly pleasant seasons in which to visit Kentucky. Fall months are the driest. The humidity levels in the state average near 54 degrees throughout the year. The humidity during the winter months averages somewhat higher.

Location - Lake Barkley is the westernmost project in a series of dams along the Cumberland River and its tributaries. From Louisville, south on I-65 to Western Kentucky Parkway, 13 miles west on US 62 through Eddyville.

Report: Went to the dam today 6/29/03 and it was closed. The gates were locked and a sign said you could not enter. No explaination was given.
