Description -
Jordanelle Dam and Reservoir, features of the Central Utah Project, Bonneville
Unit, located on the Provo River about 10 miles north of Heber City, Utah at the
6,130-foot elevation. The reservoir has about 3,050 surface acres when full.
Recreation management at Jordanelle Reservoir is performed by the Utah
Division of Parks and Recreation under agreement with the Bureau of
Reclamation. Managed recreation season is year-round with heavy use in the
summer months.
Attractions
- Jordanelle Reservoir is situated in an open setting with shade along the Francis
Arm at the 6,130-feet in elevation, and has a 3,050-acre surface
area.Opportunities for fishing occur above the reservoir, in the reservoir and
below the reservoir and the available species include rainbow, cutthroat, brown
trout, and smallmouth bass. The area also offers wetlands and wet meadows
surrounded by scrub oak hillsides, croplands, and sagebrush below the dam. At
least 89 bird species, including 66 neotropical migrants, were seen. These
include the Cedar Waxwing, Fox Sparrow, Cassin's Finch, Sandhill Crane, and
Virginia Rail. Bird activity peaks during the months of April through October.
Bald Eagles and Northern Pygmy Owl are present during the winter.
Recreation - The managed recreation season is year-round with heavy use. Recreational
activities include fishing, camping, hiking, picnicking, water sports, winter
sports, wildlife viewing and motorized boating. Available species include
rainbow, cutthroat, brown trout, and smallmouth bass. All-weather access from
U.S. 40 or State Rd. 32 from Francis, Kamas, Heber City and Park City East. U.S.
Geological Service maps cover the area. Barrier-free nature viewing.
Opportunities for fishing, camping. Fees charged. Stream fishing below the
dam. Climate - The climate of Utah varies with the terrain. Visitors to the mountains will
experience cool summer nights and passing storms that can alter a sunny day
very quickly. Be prepared with layers when recreating in the mountains.
The deserts and canyons of Utah can be dangerous places. Summer
temperatures often reach above 100 degrees F, so be sure to carry water on all
adventures. Flash floods in the canyons are also a threat. It is difficult to predict
incoming weather when deep within a canyon so check reports before venturing
into any narrow canyon areas. Location -
