General Information

Description - Timpanogos Cave National Monument sits high in the Wasatch Mountains of north central Utah. The cave system consists of three spectacularly decorated caverns. Each cavern has unique rock formations including: helictites and anthodites. As visitors climb to the cave entrance, on a hike gaining over 1,000 feet in elevation, they are offered incredible views of American Fork Canyon. The cave is open for tours from late May through mid-October.

Attractions - You'll want to begin your visit to Timpanogos Cave at the visitor center. At this facility are exhibits on the natural and cultural history of the caves. A short slide show is also available at this site, as well as a sales area. From the visitor center a short trail ascends to the cave entrances. There are three caves documented and open for public tours within the monument. The trail to the cave openings is steep, gaining 1,000 feet. In winter this trail can be snow-covered and slippery, therefore it is closed to visitors during this time of the year. Visitors should make previous arrangements for cave tours if arriving in the park between Labor Day and Memorial Day, as tours fill quickly.

Recreation - There are many recreational opportunities available in the area including backpacking, day hikes, camping, fishing, skiing, scenic driving, rock climbing and horseback riding. Winter and summer programs available at the park and surrounding area. Hiking, viewing exhibits and viewing scenery are opportunities within the park.

Climate - The temperature within the caves stays a constant 45 degrees F. Warm jackets or sweaters are recommended for cave tours. Comfortable walking shoes and drinking water are recommended for a visit in any season.

This area of Utah lies within the mountains along the Alpine Scenic Loop. Summer days are warm with cool nights especially at higher elevations. Summer thunderstorms can occur daily in the mountains. In general the climate is arid with much of the yearly precipitation falling as snow or spring rain. In fall the atmosphere stabilizes, creating brilliantly clear days and crisp air. It is best to dress in layers no matter what the season.

Location - Timpanogos Cave lies in north central Utah, south of Salt Lake City. To reach the monument take Exit I-15 North or South at Highway 92. Follow 92 eastward ten miles to the park entrance.
