Description
- The John W. Flannagan Dam and Reservoir is located in the southwest Blue Ridge Highlands region. Each year the dam releases water creating world call 3 to 5+ rapids enjoyed by rafters and kayakers. The river trip travels through spectacular views of a canyon within Breaks Interstate Park.
Recreation - Numerous rafting and kayaking outfitters are located along Russell Fork River providing "put-in" and "take-out" areas. This sport is very popular in October during the water release; reservations are suggested with the outfitters. Climate - Virginia generally has mild winters and warm humid summers. The area southwest of the mountainous Blue Ridge has cold winter months with temperatures ranging from 38 degrees Fahrenheit (3 degrees Celsius) and dropping below 34 degrees Fahrenheit (1 Celsius). The state's summer temperatures have little variation. Southwest of the mountainous Blue Ridge, summer temperatures range from below 76 degrees Fahrenheit (24 Celsius) to 78 degrees Fahrenheit (26 Celsius). Location -
