General Information

Description - Cowbane Prairie natural Area Preserve is situated in the Shenandoah Valley along the South River. The wet prairie habitat is believed to have had more dominance in the state than it presently has. There is a high calcium content and high pH creating an environment favored by a variety of endangered and rare plant life. The preserve is currently available for special use activities along with prearranged interpretive tours.

Recreation - Douthat State Park is about 1 hour southwest but the facilities and beauty are worth the trip. This park hosts a network of mountainous trails, swimming beach, trout-stocked lake, restaurant , educational programs, picnicking and camping and cabins amenities.

Climate - Virginia generally has mild winters and warm humid summers. The central to northern portion of the state has winter temperatures averaging 34 to 36 degrees Fahrenheit (1 to 2 degrees Celsius). The state's summer temperatures have little variation. The central to northern portion of Virginia generally experiences temperatures ranging from 76 to above 78 degrees Fahrenheit (26 Celsius). High humidity along with warm temperatures can be uncomfortable.

Location - From I-81 take exit 217 south to Staunton, Virginia. Head southeast on Rt. 654 approximately 4 miles. Rt. 654 and Rt. 340 intersect. Cross Rt. 340 heading south onto Rt. 909. Travel for only .6 mile to the parking area located on the the right.
