George Washington Memorial Parkway
Description - George Washington Memorial Parkway, developed as a memorial to the first U.S. President, preserves and protects the shoreline and watershed of the Potomac River. It connects historic sites from Mount Vernon passed the Nation's Capital to the Great Falls of the Potomac. This thoroughfare passes through the same lands George Washington frequently traveled by horse. The Parkway may be used on any day to travel to numerous historical, natural and recreational areas.

Recreation - This site is a 7,200-acre national park which preserves a tremendous variety of natural and cultural areas. Recreation opportunities within the boundaries of the parkway and its respective sites are numerous. Visitors will enjoy scenic driving, hiking, biking, touring historic sites and structures and viewing interpretive exhibits. Sights along the George Washington Memorial Parkway include the Arlington House / The Robert E. Lee Memorial, Clara Barton National Historic Site, Glen Echo Park, Great Falls Park, Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail, Theodore Roosevelt Island Park and the Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove on the Potomac.

Climate - Summers are usually hot and humid with high temperatures reaching 90 degrees F and above. Winters are generally cold with variable precipitation. Spring and fall are pleasant times to visit the D.C. area, as humidity is low.

Location - The parkway lies in Fairfax and Arlington counties and Alexandria, Virginia. It also leads into Montgomery County, Maryland; and the District of Columbia. The parkway is accessible from Interstates 495, 95 and 66.
