General Information

Description - This national monument encompasses over 500 acres of rolling hills a bucolic Virginia setting. It preserves and protects the birthplace and childhood surroundings of the first President. The rural setting, historic structures and livestock allow visitors to interpret life in eighteenth century Virginia. The park includes a memorial mansion, gardens and tombs of several generations of Washington's.

Recreation - Visitors to this site are encouraged to view a 14-minute film presentation providing information about the site and history of the house. Facilities include the historic home site, a colonial-era farm, family burial grounds, hiking trails and a beach area. Regularly scheduled guided tours with costumed park rangers are available. The park is handicapped accessible.

Climate - Summer months are hot and humid in this region of Virginia. Lightweight clothing is recommended as well as comfortable walking shoes. Winters are cold with occasional snow and ice. Fall and spring bring moderated temperatures and pleasant touring conditions as well as fewer visitors.

Location - This site lies on the peninsula formed by the Rappahannock and Potomac Rivers as they flow into the Chesapeake Bay. This region of northeastern Virginia is known as the "Northern Neck."
