Blacksburg / Wythe Ranger District- The Blacksburg / Wythe Ranger District is home to many beautiful campgrounds and panoramic vistas. The area even boosts raptor migration popular with bird-watchers.
Claytor Lake State Park- Claytor Lake State Park offers a wide variety of activities for water and land enthusiasts along this 21-mile power generation reservoir on the New River.
Douthat State Park- This lovely mountainous park received its name from Robert Douthat who in 1795 obtained the property through a land grant. It lies between two massive mountain ridges in Virginia's Alleghany Highlands and is well known for its beautiful trout stocked lake and recreation facilities.
Fairy Stone State Park- Fairy Stone State Park is home of the tiny "fairy stones." The park has 4,868 acres with a 168-acre lake that adjoins Philpott Reservoir and is minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway.
George Washington & Jefferson National Forests- Located in western Virginia along the rugged Appalachians, George Washington & Jefferson National Forests is a glorious park for virtually every outdoor recreation activity imaginable.
Glenwood / Pedlar Ranger District- The Glenwood / Pedlar Ranger District falls around the wonderful and popular Blue Ridge Parkway. There are endless outdoor recreation opportunities to be enjoyed by all levels of enthusiasts.
James River Ranger District- James River Ranger District is home to an abundant number of group camping and picnicking opportunities. There are swimming beaches, lakes on which recreational gas powered boats are permitted, yet there are quiet and remote multi-use trails.
Mount Rogers National Recreation Area- Mount Rogers National Recreation Area is home to the highest point in Virginia, over 5,000 feet. This area is known for its terrific multi-use trails, particularly popular with equestrians and mountain bikers. It also boosts as having beautiful scenery and numerous trout waters.
Mount Rogers Scenic Byway- Mount Rogers Scenic Byway is in two sections with both being equally beautiful. The byway is located northeast of Roanoke and is easily accessed from Interstate 81.
New Castle Ranger District- The New Castle Ranger District is home to an abundant number of recreation opportunities including boating, canoeing, hiking, mountain biking, equestrian use, overnight facilities and hunting.
Smith Mountain Lake State Park- This lovely state park is on the second largest freshwater lake in Virginia. It offers a full range of water-related activities, environmental and recreational opportunities.

General Information

Description - The Blue Ridge Parkway is close by in addition to Dixie Caverns, Virginia Explore Park, Science Museum of Western Virginia and Hopkins Planetarium, Virginia Museum of Transportation and the Blue Ridge Institute and Museum.

Recreation - Douthat State Park offers fully equipped cabins, plenty of campsites, miles of hiking trails, mountainous views and a trout-stocked lake.

Climate - Virginia generally has mild winters and warm humid summers. The mountainous Blue Ridge area has cold winter months with temperatures ranging from 36 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius) and dropping below 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 Celsius). The state's summer temperatures have little variation. The summer mountainous Blue Ridge temperatures range from below 74 degrees Fahrenheit (23 Celsius) to 78 degrees Fahrenheit (26 Celsius).

Location - Roanoke is conveniently located off Interstate 81 and the Blue Ridge Parkway south of Lexington and Rt. 64.
