Description - The 36.4-mile Buffalo River State Trail runs between Mondovi and Fairchild in west-central Wisconsin. The trail runs along a segment of the Chicago and Northwestern Rail line. As the trail parallels the scenic Buffalo River, views of secluded pasturelands, mixed woodlands, rolling hills, and marshes are offered.

The route is an easy grade offering enjoyment to hikers, bikers, horseback riders, and snowmobilers. Located between the cities of Fairchild and Osseo, both fishing and hunting opportunities unveil. A 4.0-mile stretch of river is known for its populations of brook and brown trout. Located 3.5 miles east of Osseo, the stream and bottomland habitat are conducive for hunting waterfowl, grouse and a variety of small furbearers. Call 608-685-3763 for hunting details. Also in this vicinity on the south side of the river lies the Buffalo River State Fishery Area. Farther west along the state trail in Strum, Wisconsin, a small hand-carry boat launch provides access to the Buffalo River.
Recreation - Users of Buffalo River State Trail include hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, and snowmobilers. Climate - Northwest Wisconsin has four distinct seasons with warm summers and long winters. Great Lakes Michigan and Superior tend to make summers cooler and winters milder close to shore. January's average temperature is in the single digits F (-teens C). During summer, temperatures can climb to above 90 degrees F for several days (32 degrees C). Nighttime summer temperatures occasionally dip below freezing. The area's average yearly precipitation ranges from 32-34". Annual snowfalls in the Northwest Region have a wide range; the southern areas may receive 20" while the northern areas may receive in excess of 200".
