General Information

Description - Hoffman Hills State Recreation Area is comprised of several hundred acres that were donated to the State of Wisconsin by the Hoffman family. Through their generous donation and continued donations from a variety of sources including the Menomonie Optimist Club, the Navy Seabees, and the local Sierra Club, the park is a scenic daytime getaway. Much of the terrain is mixed woodland of paper birch, box elder, and red pine accentuated by several streams and a small pond. The unruffled habitat is dotted with an understory comprised of wild geranium, false Solomon's seal, yellow and purple violets, mushrooms, and wild berries.

Attractions - Nature lovers come to Hoffman Hills Recreation Area to relax and enjoy hilly wooded parkland. A group youth camp is the only overnight provision; reservations required. Nine miles of trail allow day users to explore the park either on foot or on cross-country skis (trail pass required). A handicapped trail is offered. The trails are color-coded and are busiest in winter when they are groomed for skiers. Maps are available at the trailhead and at trail intersections. A two-mile nature trail explores the park's ridges that are comprised of birch, aspen and red pine. Moss-laden rock outcroppings punctuate the landscape. There is a walk-in picnic shelter located in a grove of pines that offers hand pump water, rustic toilet, fire ring and brick fireplace. Drive-up picnic opportunities consist of grills, several tables, hand pump water, and rustic toilet. A 60-foot observation tower provides panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Berry picking and mushroom gathering are permitted. Dogs are prohibited.

Recreation - Recreation available at Hoffman Hills SRA includes group camping, sightseeing, hiking, cross-country skiing, picnicking, and berry and mushroom gathering.

Climate - Northwest Wisconsin has four distinct seasons with warm summers and long winters. Great Lakes Michigan and Superior tend to make summers cooler and winters milder close to shore. January's average temperature is in the single digits F (-teens C). During summer, temperatures can climb to above 90 degrees F for several days (32 degrees C). Nighttime summer temperatures occasionally dip below freezing. The area's average yearly precipitation ranges from 32-34". Annual snowfalls in the Northwest Region have a wide range; the southern areas may receive 20" while the northern areas may receive in excess of 200". Dressing in layers is a good way to remain comfortable in Wisconsin.

Location - Hoffman Hills State Recreation Area is located nine miles northeast of Menominie north of Interstate 94.
