Wyoming National Wildlife Refuges

Recreation - Recreation opportunities vary from site to site. Some of the wildlife oriented recreation includes hunting, fishing, wildlife observation, self guided auto tours, viewing interpretive sites, floating the Green River, and general wildlife viewing.

Climate - As throughout the Rocky Mountains, the climate varies drastically depending on elevation. Summers generally offer warm clear days with cool nights. Afternoon thunderstorms are often a possibility in the summer. In the winter, frequent sunshine, but heavy snow in the higher elevations, are ideal for winter activities. The lakes and reservoirs in Wyoming are frozen through most of the winter. Harsh weather - including strong winds, cold, and snow - is possible throughout the winter and even throughout the year, especially in the highest elevations.

Location - The four National Wildlife Refuges in Wyoming are scattered around the state. Hutton Lake is located in southeast Wyoming, about 10 miles from Laramie. Pathfinder Reservoir is located in central Wyoming, off Highway 220, southwest of Casper. Seedstake National Wildlife Refuge lies along a 36 mile stretch of the Green River in southwest Wyoming. The National Elk Refuge is located just outside Jackson in northwest Wyoming.
