General Information

Description - Formerly named Barbour Ponds, this nature and people-friendly park offers 604 acres of land and 152 acres of water split among several ponds. It’s a great place for anglers, campers, photographers, birders, walkers and anyone who loves nature. Since 2006, Colorado State Parks added amenities like modern camping facilities, trail additions and fishing piers, with many more improvements on the way.

Attractions - The four ponds in this popular park boast some of northern Colorado's best warm-water fishing. The park is also home to many beautiful and entertaining waterfowl and wildlife. During the winter, St. Vrain serves as a home to bald eagles. St. Vrain, just 30 miles north of Denver, is convenient, quiet and charming.

Recreation - St. Vrain State Park features 60 campsites, great fishing for rainbow trout, catfish, crappie and bass, and excellent bird watching for waterfowl and many other species.

Climate - The climate in Colorado varies tremendously from hot dusty summer days to frigidly cold winter nights. Colorado is known for its thunderstorms which form over the Rocky Mountains and then head across the eastern plains, often reaching 10,000 feet or more in height. Lightening is a serious threat, particularly on mountain peaks, lakes and open fields. Summertime temperatures routinely reach 90 to 100 degrees on the plains and the 70 - 80 degrees in the mountains. Cool weather is always possible at night throughout Colorado, particularly at higher elevations. It is not uncommon to need both shorts and a jacket on the same day. The winter routinely brings severe winter driving conditions with icy roads and limited visibility. Temperatures range from the 40s and 50s on the plains to well below zero in the mountains. Proper winter clothing and food is necessary to avoid hypothermia and one should be prepared to spend an unexpected night out if traveling in the backcountry or on the highways.

Location - Directions - Exit I-25 on Colorado 119 west, then north on County Road 7 until it ends into County Road 24 1/2. Turn right to the park entrance.
