General Information

Description - Parks and Gardens are numerous in the capital and offer a welcome respite from the monuments, historic sites and museums.

Attractions - Rock Creek park is and extensive network of park and garden. The C&O Canal is another beautiful experience. Other gardens offer a variety of sights, sounds and experiences.

Recreation - Recreation in the gardens includes walks and hikes and bird watching. Viewing of plants and flowers is a primary activity in any garden.

Climate - The District of Columbia experiences four distinct seasons. Winter can be very unpredictable with bitter cold and freezing precipitation or mild, sunny days. Be prepared with layered clothing for winter visits to the region.

Fall and spring are mild and pleasant with colorful foliage and blooming flora respectively. Usually the humidity remains at a very comfortable level during these seasons. During the summer months the temperatures and humidity, along with the crowds, rise to often uncomfortable proportions, although this season brings outdoor events daily.

Location - the location of each garden is described in the pages for each individual one. Maps are provided on the pages as well.
