General Information

Description - Tennessee's reservoirs are used for recreational purposes as well as other uses such as power production, flood control, water supply, water quality and aquatic ecology. Tennessee reservoirs offer nearly limitless opportunities for fun-filled activities, including water skiing, canoeing, sailing, windsurfing, fishing, swimming, hiking, nature photography, picnicking, birdwatching, and camping. Tennessee's reervoirs are home to many varieties of fish, including largemouth and smallmouth bass, catfish, bluegill, sauger, and crappie.

Attractions - TVA operates some 100 public recreation areas throughout the Tennessee Valley, including campgrounds, day-use areas, and boat launching ramps. All 11 campgrounds on TVA reservoirs are closed for the winter and will reopen in mid-March. Check this page for the specific opening date and other updated information. TVA’s day-use recreation areas remain open year-round.

Climate - Tennessee has a temperate climate with short, mild winters. The average annual snowfall for the state is 12 inches. Spring comes in early March bringing flowering trees and shrubs, and warmer weather. Spring temperatures average between 45 and 70 degrees F. Summer's full force arrives in the region by mid May, bringing warm weather and higher humidity. Cool fall temperatures bring crisp air and brilliant fall colors. Mid to late October is a good time to visit the region to experience the fall foliage.

Location - Most of the reservoirs in Tennessee are managed by The Tennessee Valley Authority. The reservoirs are accessible from major cities such as Kingsport, Knoxville and Chattanooga.
