Description
- The Boulder Ranger District of the Roosevelt National Forest contains the Indian Peaks Wilderness. Area attractions include the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway, the Eldora Ski Resort and the Brainard Lake/St. Vrain Recreation Area.
Recreation - This area offers plenty of recreational activities from mountain biking, climbing (both rock and ice), hiking, fishing and sightseeing along the Peak to Peak Highway. Winter activities include skiing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Climate - This area is a mountainous region with sporadic weather patterns. While the weather is relatively mild, fall and winter storms can be quite harsh. Weather patterns can change dramatically and quickly, so its important to be prepared for these changes. Summer temperatures usually reach the low 80s, but can drop to freezing with an oncoming storm. (The higher you climb the colder the temperatures will be. You can count on a four degree temperature drop for every 1,000 foot elevation gain.) Warm clothes, hats and gloves are necessary for summer mountaineering and camping. Winter temperatures can be extreme, especially if your in the mountains. Storms can move in quickly, so its important to be prepared. Wicking layers are an important weapon against changing temperatures. Days are often sunny and feel warm when your performing aerobic activities. Warm layers are important for shade and post-activity. Location -
The Boulder Ranger District is located just west of Boulder in the Rocky Mountains. The main route of travel through this area is the Peak to Peak Highway. This consists of Colorado State Road 119 from U.S. Highway 70 to Boulder and Colorado State Road 72 from Nederland to Estes Park.
