Description - Covering the eastern and middle section of the Mount Hood National Forest, the Zigzag Ranger District offers a wide variety of outdoor recreation and beautiful scenery. Activities include fishing, hiking, biking, backpacking, camping, horseback riding, huckleberry picking, and boating. The Olallie Lake Scenic area provides extraordinary views of Mount Jefferson in addition to several lakes for fisherman and boaters to enjoy. The Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness, also a part of this ranger district, is steep and rocky and dissected by the Salmon River and Eagle Creek. Many visitors enjoy huckleberry picking in this wilderness.

Hood changes with elevation.The area receives a high amount of precipitation. Much of the precipitation comes from October to April in the form of rain at the low elevations and as wet heavy snow in the higher elevations. Although snow is possible in the lowest elevations, it is infrequent. Late spring, summer and early autumn tend to bring clear, sunny days with moderate temperatures. Location -
