General Information

Description - This state park lies in the high country of the southern San Juan Mountains in the southwestern corner of Colorado.

Attractions - Mancos State Park encompasses 338 acres surrounding Jackson Gulch Dam and Reservoir. The reservoir is the recreation focus of the park. It is comprised of 216 surface acres. Because it lies at 7,800 feet Mancos Lake is considered an alpine lake.

Facilities at the park include two campgrounds. On the southern shore you'll find a 24-site campground with tables, grills, vault toilets and water hydrants. Volleyball and horseshoe facilities are located in this area and open to visitors. A dump station exists at the entrance to this site. A group picnic ground, boat ramp and ranger station are also located in this area.

The other campground lies on the northern shore of the lake. It is considered a primitive site, because there is no drinking water available. Each site includes a grill, table and access to vault toilets. Two picnic areas exist along the northern shore of the lake. This is also where hikers can gain access to the Chicken Creek Trail, which leads into the San Juan National Forest.

Recreation - Mancos Lake is the recreation focus of this secluded state park. Sailing, fishing and wake less boating may be enjoyed on the lake. Picnicking, hiking, camping, volleyball, horseshoes and mountain biking are activities in which visitors to this area may participate.

Climate - In the summer, daytime temperatures range from 85 to 100 degrees F, dropping to 55 to 65 F at night. In the winter months, the temperatures may reach a high of 50 degrees F. Average precipitation is about 18 inches annually.

Location - Mancos State Park lies immediately south of the San Juan National Forest between Durango and Dolores. It is ten miles north of Mesa Verde National Park.

Colorado State Parks - Colorado is world renowned for natural beauty and outdoor recreation. Visiting Colorado's state parks is an excellent way to gain access to the natural environment and the recreation opportunities created by it.
Cortez Area - Ten miles west of Mesa Verde National Park, Cortez makes a good home base for exploring the Park, the Mancos-Dolores Ranger District and the Dolores River. Cortez is near the San Juan River and the desert country of Utah.
Dolores Area - Various mining towns surround the area. The nearby Dolores River offers many rafting and kayaking opportunities and the area has a good access point for getting to the western part of the San Juan Mountains.
Mancos Area - Mancos is located in close proximity to Mesa Verde National Park, one of the richest archaeological areas in the United States. Cortez is the service center for this area.
