General Information

Pearl Lake in autumn

Pearl Lake in autumn
Description - Pearl Lake State Park lies amidst the lands of the Routt National Forest north of Steamboat Springs and west of the Continental Divide.

Attractions - It features a 167 surface-acre lake, and draws most of its visitors for trout fishing. The following are special restrictions on fishing at Pearl Lake: artificial flies and lures must be used, all trout under 14 inches must be returned to the lake. Please check at the Steamboat Lake visitor center to obtain specific regulations.

The facilities in the park include one campground with 40 sites. Large motor homes cannot be accommodated here, but smaller camping vehicles can enjoy sites with a table, grill and vault toilets. South of the campground is a boat ramp and a fishing trail, that leads around the lake.

Recreation - Most visitors to Pearl Lake come for the fishing. Camping, picnicking and boating may also be enjoyed within the park. Interpretive programs through Steamboat Lake State Park are available during the summer months. The road into the park is not maintained during the winter months. Ice fishing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling are permitted in the park.

Climate - The elevation of Pearl Lake State Park is approximately 8,000 feet. Weather changes frequently, and dramatically, at this elevation. A lovely summer morning can change quickly into a storm with cold rain and snow. Be prepared for cold temperatures and precipitation at any time of the year. Hypothermia is a serious threat in any season.

Summer temperatures range from 40s at night to 80s during the day. Winter temperatures usually reach the high 30s during the day and dip into the teens at night. Sun protection is necessary during all season.

Location - Pearl Lake State Park is located in north central Colorado approximately 25 miles north of Steamboat Springs. The lake lies on and is fed by Lester Creek, which feeds into the Elk River. The public lands of the Routt National Forest surround the park.

Report: We didn't camp in the campground but checked it out for future reference, and we will definately go back! Large campground was fairly empty when we went through during the week. We hiked around the lake with our two kids(under the age of 5) and enjoyed the walk. It gets sunny on the North end, I'd go that way first! Nice place for a day hike and a picnic.

Report: Very peaceful as advertised. Campsites are nicely spaced. Most you have to walk down a ways to get to picnic tables and tent sites. Very popular on weekends. Make reservations on weekends. All sites shaded. Saw a mountain lion! Beautiful! I will return to this park! PS: the cutthroat trout are BIG!
