Ridgway State Park

Ridgway State Park
Description - The park is centered upon Ridgway Reservoir, a 1,000 surface-acre lake, which is stocked with rainbow and brown trout. There are over 2,000 acres of land within the park boundaries. In Ridgeway State Park more than 80 percent of the facilities are accessible for physically disabled visitors.

Attractions - The attractions at Ridgway State Park are numerous. Three recreation sites exist around the lake with a variety of facilities.

Driving south from Montrose on Highway 550, the first site in Ridgway State Park that you'll reach is Pa-Co-Chu-Puk. This site exists north of the reservoir along the banks of the Uncompahgre River. The facilities include two campgrounds with a total of 81 sites. Each site has a level cement pad, table, grill, water hydrant and electrical and sewage hookups. Also in the Pa-Co-Chu-Puk Area is a group picnic area that can accommodate 200 people. The picnic area includes shaded shelters, a volleyball court, horseshoe pits and a playground. Two fishing ponds allow anglers to keep their fish and use bait. Fishing in the Uncompahgre River in this area is catch and release only. A trail from the western bank of the river leads to the top of the dam.

If you continue driving southward on Highway 550 you'll next reach the Dutch Charlie Recreation Site of Ridgway State Park. This area is located on a peninsula that juts into the reservoir from the eastern shore. The park headquarters and visitor center provide any information required for Ridgway State Park. You'll find two camping areas with 187 modern sites in this area. A camper services building in the Dutch Charlie Area provides showers, laundry facilities, flush toilets and water hydrants. A dump station is located in this area of the park. A marina provides buoy and slip rentals. South of the marina are swim and picnic areas. The swim area has a beach house with changing rooms, lockers and showers. The Dutch Charlie Area is the center for a 12-mile trail system that connects the three recreation sites.

The Dallas Creek Recreation Site is the southern most area of Ridgway State Park. It is a day-use area with picnic grounds and reservoir access. Hand held boats may be launched from the Bayview and Lakeview parking lots of this area.

Recreation - Most activities are center around the Ridgway Reservoir. Boating, fishing, swimming, camping, picnicking, jet skiing, water skiing, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, ice skating, ice fishing and interpretive programs can be enjoyed in Ridgway State Park.

Climate - This site lies at an approximate elevation of 6,600 feet. In this valley the climate has four seasons and is relatively mild compared to that of the mountainous regions around it.

Location - Ridgway State Park lies on the eastern edge of the Uncompahgre Plateau with Log Hill Mesa to the immediate west. The San Juan Mountains lie to the south of the park in the Uncompahgre National Forest, which also lies to the east.
