Sumner Lake State Park

Description - This sparkling blue lake with a rocky shoreline and gently rolling hillsides of juniper provides a refreshing change from the flat grasslands of New Mexico's eastern plains. Sumner Lake State Park offers fishing for a variety of species including, bass, crappie and channel catfish, and is a winter haven for migrating waterfowl. The lake is busiest during summer months. There is a large primitive camping area on the east side of the lake. No facilities are provided there and visitors must pack out anything that they pack in. The park is comprised of 6,700 acres of land in addition to the 4,500 acres of lake. Altitude at Sumner Lake is 4,500 feet. Park amenities include a group picnic shelter, restrooms, and showers. Campground facilities include 48 developed sites, some with electric hookup, and an RV.
Attractions
- Nearby is the Civil War relic, Fort Sumner, with many special historical events and interpretation. Billy the Kid's grave site also is close for outlaw buffs.
Recreation - Besides excellent warmwater fishing, boating, swimming, sailing, and water skiing are popular. Other recreation opportunities include camping and picnicking. Climate - Annual precipitation is 14.8 inches. Summer temperatures range from lows around 62 to highs around 92. Winter temps range from lows of 24 degrees to highs around 56. Location -
