Aiken State Park
Description - Four spring-fed lakes and the South Edisto River make Aiken State Park popular with both fishermen and campers. This area is a combination of a river swamp and dry sand hills; the latter provides evidence of an era when the sea reached this far inland. Built in the 1930's by the Civilian Conservation Corps, this 1,067-acre park has a variety of animal and plant life, making it an excellent location for nature study.

The park offers 25 campsites and sites that can accommodate RV's up to 35 feet. There is a 3-mile nature trail which provides an easy hike. The Edisto River has a 2-mile canoe trail with canoes rentals available. Fishing is available for bream, bass and catfish, in one of the three park lakes or the Edisto River. A South Carolina fishing license is required. Fishing boats(nonmotorized) can be rented at the park for a reasonable price. Private boats are not allowed on the park lake. Picnic shelters are available free on a first-come, first-served basis, or reserved for a fee.

Recreation - Activities available in Aiken State Park include camping, hiking, canoeing, fishing, picnicking and nature study. Each campsite is rented on a first-come, first-served basis, except for 2 sites which may be reserved exclusively for the handicapped.

Climate - South Carolina generally has a temperate climate, with cool winters and warm, humid summers. Snow and freezing temperatures are possible in the winter at the higher elevations. Thunderstorms are possible throughout the year but most common in the spring and summer. Tropical storms occasionally strike the coast during the hurricane season.

Location - Aiken State Park is located in the west-central portion of the state. The park is 16 miles east of the town of Aiken off US 78 or off Highway 302, 50 miles from Columbia.

Report: We went camping for 4 days and 3 nights. The campground was quite!! The rangers were super helpful. We have a 3 year old child that is handicapped, the campsites were level and easy for him to use his walker. We are currently planning a field trip there this week and the rangers are preparing a lesson for the children on animal tracks. The biggest pitfall to Aiken State Park is no swimming. But they do have canoes for rent. We canoed the Edisto River (can be difficult to naviagte because of the directional changes of the river and the narrow width). We had a GREAT time. We would recommend it highly to anyone. Take your bug spray!!
