Description
- Demopolis Lake is the largest lake in the Black Warrior-Tombigbee system. The lake extends 48 miles upriver on the Black Warrior and 53 miles up the Tombigbee and covers 10,000 acres. Two modern campgrounds and many day use facilities, as well as primitive camping areas, are available on Demopolis Lake. There is also a large, full service marina at Demopolis. The region around Demopolis Lake is excellent hunting territory. Permits are required to hunt in both areas. The Corps of Engineers provide ten day use parks for use by the public. These parks provide the public with a variety of recreational opportunities and easy access to the water. The holiday season begins each year with a week of special activities called "Christmas on the River." This annual Demopolis tradition is climaxed by a night time parade on the river which is viewed by huge crowds from the white bluff above the Tombigbee River.
Recreation - Some of the many activities available at Demopolis Lake include camping, picnicking, boating, water skiing, fishing, and hunting. Climate - The climate of Alabama's lowlands can be described as subtropical with nearly 60 inches of rain each year. The highest amount of rain reaches the region as afternoon thunderstorms in July, August and September. Summers are extremely hot and humid with temperatures frequently reaching above 100 degrees F. Summer nights cool slightly and provide a good time to travel through the region. Winter temperatures are mild, rarely dipping below 40 degrees with the humidity level at its lowest in November and December. Spring and fall are very pleasant times to visit the region.
