Description
- Landsford Canal, the best preserved of numerous 19th century South Carolina river canals, has remnants of all its major structural features. It is the uppermost of four canals constructed on the Catawba Wateree river system during the period 1820-1835. The 460-acre park includes the remnants of 1820 canal-culverts, stone bridges, locks, historic mill site and a lockkeeper's house which contains interpretive exhibits about the canal system in South Carolina. The rocky shoals on the Catawba River are home to one of the world's largest populations of rocky shoals spider lilies. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Historic canal tours are offered on Sundays, year-round. There is a 1-mile nature trail and a 1 1/2-mile canal trail. Canoe access to the Catawba River is available. The park also has a picnic shelter, and a log cabin meeting facility for up to 60 people. Enjoy fishing in Catawba River for catfish, bream, largemouth bass, carp and gar. The shoals also provide excellent fishing opportunities for largemouth bass and bream. The Catawba River for offers fishing for catfish, bream, largemouth bass, carp and gar.
Recreation - This park offers opportunities for viewing the historic canal and surrounding sites. It also offers fishing, walking, picnicking, and canoe access. Climate - South Carolina generally has a temperate climate, with cool winters and warm, humid summers. Snow and freezing temperatures are possible in the winter at the higher elevations. Thunderstorms are possible throughout the year but most common in the spring and summer. Tropical storms occasionally strike the coast during the hurricane season. Location -
