Description
- Muir Woods National Monument contains 295-acres of old growth coastal redwoods. The redwood groves surround Redwood Creek creating a place of tranquil giants in an urban setting, which is accessible to visitors of all abilities. Until the 1800s, many northern California coastal valleys were covered with redwood trees similar to those found in Muir Woods National Monument. This grove of redwoods was spared from logging because it was hard to reach. The area was purchased by a California Senator and his wife, the Kents, to preserve its unique natural quality. The Kents were afraid future generations wouldn't be able to enjoy this resource, because redwood groves were disappearing quickly due to development. It was named, at the Kents request, for conservationist and philosopher John Muir.
Recreation - This site provides access to hiking, walking, exhibit viewing and scenery viewing. Parking space is very limited, with no space for RVs, and fills quickly on most days. The park is extremely crowded during the summer months. The Visitor Center, at the entrance, is a good place to begin a visit at Muir Woods. It contains exhibits, knowledgeable staff members and a bookstore. The visitor center is open from 9:00 am to 4:30 p.m. Redwood Canyon is a place to walk and enjoy the forest. The park's 560 acres include six miles of walking trails. The primary trails along the canyon floor are level and paved. Bridges across Redwood Creek make short loop walks possible. Unpaved trails lead out of the canyon and connect with 60 miles of trails in Mt. Tamalpais State Park, or to the Pacific Ocean. There are no lodging, camping facilities or RV facilities available within Muir Woods, however there are Hostels and Camping opportunities within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. A variety of lodging and camping is also available in the surrounding area to include Mt. Tamalpais State Park. While hiking visitors should be aware of poison oak and stinging nettle, which are common throughout the park. Proceed with caution during high winds when branches or trees may fall. Climate - The park is cool, shaded and moist year-round, due to summer coastal fog and winter storms. Daytime temperatures at Muir Woods average between 40 and 70 degrees F, with an annual rainfall of about 40 inches. Most of the precipitation occurs during the winter and spring months. Located 156 feet above sea level at the visitor center, Muir Woods is a 560-acre national monument in Marin County, California. The site lies 17 miles north of San Francisco and is a unit of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It is surrounded by Mt. Tamalpais State Park.
