Description - Fort McClary, in one form or another, was active during five wars, from the American Revolution to World War I. The buildings on-site represent several different periods of construction as the fort was upgraded to meet the area's defensive needs. The fort is located in Southern Main off US 1 and the Maine Turnpike.

Attractions - When travelers visit Maine, especially for the first time, often they expect to see the much talked about rugged dark stone shores with cold crashing waves framed by beautiful blue skies, crystal ocean waters and small islands occupied with historic lighthouses. Most folks venture off Interstate 95 onto US 1 with those expectations in mind. Their dreams quickly vanish when they are surrounded by bustling tourist traps in an area that deceivingly appears landlocked. By weaving around a few short streets, visitors will come upon this historic fort located along a neighborhood street. It is open year-round if you consider parking at the street and walking around the entrance gate. You will not be disappointed with the view. It is everything read or seen about Maine's famous coastline.

Touring Fort McClary and enjoying an outdoor meal at a relaxing picnic grove is available each year between Memorial Day and September 30th. Visitors may actually view the area, including the exterior of the fort, throughout the year by parking outside the entrance and walking around the gate.

Climate - The year-round vacation spot of the Southern Maine Coast Region experiences daytime winter temperatures above 18 degrees Fahrenheit (-8 Celsius). Similar to the Greater Portland and Mid Coast Regions, summer daytime temperatures average a pleasant 68 degrees (20 Celsius) or slightly above. The region receives an average of 40 - 44 inches (102 - 112 centimeters) of precipitation each year.

Location - Fort McClary State Historic Site is located 2.5 miles from US 1 and Maine Turnpike on Kittery Point Road (SR 103 -- turn at rotary).
